Gateway Africa was originally founded in 1993, by professional Rangers and Safari Specialists. Who wanted to bring the old style of 'Out-of-Africa' safaris back to visitors to Africa, at a more affordable price.

Christian Fourie: Ex-Wilderness Safaris and Ongava Game Reserve Ranger Our passion is to share with you a unique and informative African experience filled with fun and adventure that is affordable and comfortable with no hidden cost, we concentrate on offering unique personalized safaris and tours. Ranger Christian Fourie

Gateway Africa is a safari facilitator, consisting of two permanent staff at our logistics office in Cape Town, and one in our financial office in Birr, Switzerland.

We facilitate safari tours under the banner of the leading safari companies and properties in Southern Africa. By promoting and broker their safari and tour products; by supplying freelance guides & itineraries, working directly for them, or combining guests with a suitable freelance guide.

Gateway Africa receive special preferential rates from these companies and properties, and these savings, we past on to our guests.

The various companies pay us for our services, or employ the freelance guides. By this creating a win-win situation of work for the guides, and lower safari rates for the guests.

Our scheduled safari tours on our website are divided between four highly respected specialist companies: Each registered to various Tourism, Travel bodies in their respective fields and countries.

Wild Dog: Namibia - Originally conceived, born and operated as two separate companies in 1997, Wild Dog Safaris & Crazy Kudu Safaris always had a close association for the first eight years of their separate existence. Both companies operated their first safaris in July 1997 and over the ensuing years, individually built up respected trading names within the Namibian tourism industry.

Wild Dog Safaris was originally founded by
Allan & Liz Kirby

Crazy Kudu Safaris was originally founded by Mike Godfrey

On 1st June 2005 Wild Dog & Crazy Kudu formed a merger, joining forces to become one of Namibia’s largest mobile safari operators, and the biggest company in Namibia to specialize in camping safaris.

All our scheduled Namibian safaris have guaranteed departures with no minimum numbers. When clients book with us, they can be sure that their safari will run, regardless of how many other people are booked on the trip.

On 15th April 2007 Allan Kirby passed away.

Marc Germiquet and Heiko Genzmer

Bush Ways: Botswana

Marc Germiquet:
I started seriously working in the safari industry in 1991 after having been a tour guide covering the wilderness areas in both southern and eastern Africa. After completing a tour across the length of Africa from the extreme north, to the tip of the Cape my goal was set on creating safaris of my own with a mind to offering down-to-earth tours with a personal touch. My skills acquired during my travels and my intense love for nature contributed richly to the quality of the trails we offer. Our co-workers share the same passion and commitment as we do. Bush Ways Safaris was consequently born in 1996 and we continue to offer incredible value with a balance of personal attention, knowledge of the area and professionalism.
Heiko Genzmer:
My involvement with the safari industry began in 1992 and, like Marc, I was involved in guiding in both south and east Africa. Having been school friends, Marc and I realized our paths followed the same route and we joined forces in 1997 with the aim of building Bush Ways Safaris into a professional Botswana tour operation offering more than one tour option. Since then we have grown successfully with seven organized trails and the ability to customize trails for those looking for exclusivity. Marc and I share the same vision to create a business that is based on personalized attention and the desire to share our knowledge with those who are not so fortunate as to experience life in the wild every day.

The Gateway Africa Idea - The Originals: 20 years ago, Southern Africa was still a wild place of political strive, bad roads and really wild wilderness areas.

Safari guides were the frontline for these Overland Safari Tour Companies, doing the hard work and had to take responsibility for safari vehicles, equipment and tourists. Facing long hard hours of driving, guiding, fixing vehicles and equipment, cooking and keeping guests happy.

Between malaria, wild animals, bad roads and "burn-out", the survival rate of a safari guide was low. As the late Little Mike of Nomad used to say: "This is a life-style, our way of life, our passion is Africa...hakuna matata!"

Yet, these overland safari guides had little protection, no medical aid or pensions, working for meager salaries on the concept of "no work, no pay". At least things has improved.

In the winter of 1990, around a campfire in the Okavango Delta, the gateway-idea was born as a networking place for African safari guides. A place to share information on working opportunities for overland guides, sharing of safari information and ideas.

In the passing years some of our colleagues and friends has form their own safari operations, or went on the "long walk". Of the original group of seven, one is left.

We create work for dozens of guides per year, with a data-base of over a hundred freelance guides.

What is a Ranger guide? Ranger guides are experienced multi-country wildlife and safari experts, who generally comes from a professional game ranging or conservation back-ground at Private or National Game Reserves, before following a career in tourism and safari tour guiding.

These highly educated, multi-disciplined Ranger Guides have years of experience in safari travel in various wildlife areas in different countries. With extensive in-depth knowledge of African wildlife, plants, tribal cultures, natural history, archaeology and geography. This wealth of knowledge and experience, they wish to share with you.

Many guests return year after year to be guided by a particular Ranger, or safari guide with whom they have built up a relationship on previous trips.

Each individual Guide has various official qualifications and are registered with various tourism bodies in their specialization field and country of operation.

Our guides are recognized as specialists in their profession: we do also organize independent specialist and private guides for groups with very specific requirements. These interests may range from ornithology to astronomy, paleontology, photography, botany and even anthropology. In such cases we contract independent guides - often university academics and recognized authorities - with whom we have worked before and who understand our business, camps and culture.
